Pickler brings emotional power, vocal strength, but also some iffy notes

Country singer and former "American Idol" contestant Kellie Pickler was this afternoon at WE Fest what she usually is: ridiculously adorable and just about as likable.

Despite the light rain that fell during much of her performance, she drew a strong crowd, especially for a 3:30 p.m. concert (the show actually started closer to 4 p.m.). At one point, she asked the crowd, we aren’t going to “let a little rain get in the way, are we?”

Pickler brought a strong vocal quality to the performance, and she mustered some significant emotional power on songs like “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You” and “I Wonder.” The latter had some tear-jerking capacity. “Rocks Instead of Rice” seems a little mean-spirited. But “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful” had a strong sweet streak.

There was plenty to enjoy, but it wasn’t perfect. If my ears didn’t deceive me there were some iffy notes. Back on "Idol," Randy Jackson might have had occasions to say, "It was a little pitchy, Dawg."
