DivinityAndBeyond blog: Bishops denounce author with Minnesota ties

From www.divinityandbeyond.com

The Divinity and Beyond blog reports:

“U.S. Catholic bishops’ doctrine committee today denounced a book on sexuality written by two Nebraska theologians — one with Minnesota ties.

“The book, The Sexual Person: Toward a Renewed Catholic Anthropology, was co-authored by Michael Lawler and Todd Salzman and published by Georgetown University Press in 2008 …

“In denouncing The Sexual Person, the doctrine committee said the theologians erroneously “argue for the moral legitimacy of some homosexual acts.”

Red River Women’s Clinic draws dueling demonstrations

PHoto by David Samson / The Forum

Hundreds of people marched quietly through downtown Fargo in a procession Sunday behind a statue of the Virgin Mary and a cross in a “Walk with Christ for Life.”

The Eucharistic procession, led by Bishop Samuel Aquila, began after a Mass at the Cathedral of St. Mary and paused in front of the Red River Women’s Clinic, North Dakota’s only abortion provider.

In front of the clinic, a group of pro-choice supporters staged their own service, as the two opposing sides over abortion recited their prayers in peaceful but determined defiance of one another.

Northwestern Minnesota Synod Bishop Larry Wohlrabe made a comment for the story that couldn’t be included in the story because of deadline constraints. Here is his comment: “Hawley Lutheran Church is a strong, active congregation. We would hate to lose them from our fellowship in the ELCA. I look forward to the consultation I’ll be having with them, which is a required part of the disaffiliation process. This will be an opportunity for me to hear their concerns and urge them to remain in the ELCA.”

Fargo Diocese Bishop Aquila encourages priests, faithful to pray outside abortion facility

Samuel J. Aquila, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo

In a late August letter, Fargo Bishop Samuel Aquila asked the priests of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo to schedule at least one hour of prayer outside North Dakota’s only abortion facility during the upcoming 40 Days for Life North Dakota campaign. He also encouraged parishioners to do the same.

The 40-day campaign of prayer, fasting, community outreach and peaceful vigil on the sidewalk outside the Red River Women’s Clinic in Fargo begins Sept. 22.

Bishop Aquila also announced that he will lead the annual Walk with Christ for Life procession to the clinic on Sept. 26 and that he has scheduled an Oct. 28 hour of personal prayer outside the facility.

ELCA bishop Mark Hanson to hold online town hall meeting

ELCA Bishop Mark Hanson

The Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), will answer questions on a variety of topics from members of the denomination at 4 p.m. (Central Time) Sept. 19.  Hanson will take questions during an hour-long “Town Hall Forum.”

The town hall comes a little more than a year after the 2009 Churchwide Assembly when the denomination opened it’s pulpits to individuals in same-gender relationship. Critics have seen that as another step in a continuing slide away from the scriptures.

Don’t expect that issue to eclipse all else in the discussion. It’s likely that other issues will be brought to bear. Though not completely unrelated to the gay clergy issue, there may be questions related to financial issues in the denomination.

It is the second such meeting of the year and the third since December 2009.

New Lutheran denomination elects first bishop and its executive council

AP photo - Rev. Paull Spring

The newly-formed North American Lutheran Church elected its provisional leaders on Aug. 27.  The following individuals were elected for provisional one-year terms at the Lutheran CORE Convocation in Grove City, Ohio.

Rev. Paull Spring of  State College, Penn., was elected bishop. The executive council members are Rev. Donald Allman of Grove City, Ohio, Rev. Amanda Grimmer of Abington, Penn., James Hansen of Charleston, W.Virg., Rev. Victor Langford, of Seattle, Wash., Carol Lattier of Tyler, Texas, Rev. James T. Lehmann of Thomasboro, Ill. ,Ryan Schwarz, Washington, D.C., and Kay Johnson Weaver of Vale, N.C.

The court of adjudication is composed of: Richard Currey of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jon Evans of Pittsburgh, Penn., James Gale of Washington, D.C., Rev. Jeffray Greene, Rantoul, Ill., Rev. Ralph Kempski of Aiken, S.C., Carolyn Nestingen of St. Paul, Minn., and Dallas, Ore., and Rev. Ronald Warren of Grove City, Ohio.

The NALC formed, in part, in reaction to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s 2009 Churchwide Assembly, which opted to allow individuals in same-gender relationships to serve as rostered ministers and passed a controversial social statement on human sexuality. Critics saw those decisions as part of a slide away from scripture in the ELCA. The traditionalist group Lutheran CORE, which had worked for reform in the ELCA,  spearheaded efforts to begin the new denomination.

The following were elected for provisional one-year terms at the Lutheran CORE Convocation in Grove City, OH on August 27, 2010.

ELCA Bishop Mark Hanson calls for immigration reform in letter to President Barack Obama

From an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America press release:

"If Congress does not pass comprehensive immigration reform soon, state legislators and local governments will continue to take immigration policy into their own hands, wrote the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), in a July 27 letter to U.S. President Barack Obama.

"’This would create an untenable patchwork of differing local laws and produce confusion for law enforcement officials and lawfully present people, as well as increased suffering for the undocumented,’ wrote Hanson."
